Grow Medicinal Herbs: Three Strong and Easy Plants
By Daniel Yordy

Growing and tending the strong plants that contribute to our health and well-being adds wonder to life.  I love to watch an herb I have not before grown become the full plant that it is, whether I make use of it or not.  Herbs such as comfrey or mullein contribute strength just by being in the garden.  Easy-to-grow garlic, dandelion, and alfalfa are the workhorses of nutritional value.  But though I love to grow them, they are not overly dramatic.

Here are three medicinal herbs that are both grand and easy to grow:

Rosemary
You will love Rosemary.  Besides giving that Mediterranean feel to your garden, it loves to grow.  It expands bigger and bigger, though not tall, three feet, maybe.  Make Rosemary the center of a shorter herb garden.  It rules like a kindly shepherd.

Whack the Rosemary branches back in winter, just before Christmas would be a good time.  Then you can weave the rosemary branches throughout your house and add a heavenly aroma to your holiday.  The new growth in the spring rewards the trim back.

Sadly, Rosemary is a warm weather plant.  It  dislikes temperatures below 20 degrees.  Here in Houston, it needs no protection in winter.  A little further north, cover it during the occasional cold snaps.  In the north, it will flourish in a container brought in for the winter.  That’s great, because every time you brush against it, Rosemary aroma fills your house.

Echinacea
Different from Rosemary, Echinacea grows as far north, nearly, as flowering plants will grow outside.  Echinacea is a strong looking flower, with high value for health and vigor.  What I like about growing Echinacea is that it reseeds itself every year quite easily, yet it is never invasive.  If you find a new Echinacea plant growing where you don’t want it, pull it out and that’s it; it also transplants elsewhere easily. Yet, every year, Echinacea finds new places to inhabit and add striking color to your garden.

Mullein
Mullein is a strange and majestic plant.  It needs its own space in the background of your garden.  Its flower shoot rises up in the second year, four to six feet high, more than strong enough to support itself.  Mullein reseeds itself, but doesn’t spread.  I enjoy its quiet strength.

I don’t know as much about the practical side of growing and making use of medicinal herbs as I would like to know.  I love to try new plants to see what they become.  I would love to hear of your experiences in growing and making use of medicinal herbs.  I’m sure I will learn much from you.
