CLEP Tests For College Credit - What to Expect
By Amanda Suryan

Credit-by-examination tests like CLEP tests are a great way to earn college credit outside of the classroom. Anyone can take these tests, whether you want to get ahead in your coursework or get a jump start on college while in high school. The best way to succeed on CLEP tests is to be well-informed before you go in to take one.

Time Limit
Each CLEP exam has a time limit of 90 minutes and is computer-based. When you take a test, as you go through the questions you will see a clock on the top corner of your computer screen counting down the time you have remaining to complete your exam. You do have the option of hiding the clock and making it invisible. If it makes you nervous to see the seconds counting down, you may find it helpful to choose not to display the clock while you're answering questions. After all, you don't want to rush through the test and not do a good job just because you feel that you're pressed for time.

The Questions
The number of questions on each CLEP test varies. Some tests have 80 questions, some have 120, but the average is probably around 100. Each question is multiple choice with the exception of some optional essays. Generally the 90-minute time limit is plenty of time for most test-takers to answer all the questions and go back and check their answers before clicking the "Submit" button.

Scoring
CLEP exams are pass/fail. If you get enough questions right, then you pass and earn the college credits. If you don't get enough right, then you don't pass. It's that simple. The American Council of Education gives a recommendation for how many credits schools should offer for each test, but those are only guidelines. The number of credits you can earn for a test will depend on the school you're enrolled in.

For students who want to get ahead quickly in their college education, CLEP tests can help you succeed.
